The type of shingles attached to your roof plays an important role in protecting your home from the elements, but so does its underlayment. The underlayment functions as a secondary protective layer for roof decking—the base of your roof—in the event water or moisture or the chemicals used in shingles manage to infiltrate your roof.
Keep in mind not all types of underlayment provide the same level of protection. In general, there are three types. Next Level Roofers, one of the most trusted local roofing companies in the area, elaborates on their respective pros and cons below.
3 Types of Underlayment
- Asphalt-saturated felt underlayment – Of the three, this is the most affordable option. It comes in 15-pound and 30-pound varieties. The latter is heavier than the former but is stiffer and more resistant to damage during the installation of your roof.
- Non-bitumen synthetic underlayment – Most roofers would recommend non-bitumen synthetic underlayment, which has a higher resistance to moisture than asphalt-saturated felt underlayment.
- Rubberized asphalt underlayment – In terms of moisture resistance, nothing comes close to rubberized asphalt underlayment, not even non-bitumen synthetic underlayment. This type of underlayment has a high percentage of asphalt and rubber polymer and features an adhesive underside, all of which makes it completely waterproof. Of course, rubberized asphalt underlayment isn’t without its disadvantages. For instance, it’s a bit on the pricey side, compared to the other two. However, if you’re looking for a durable roof, rubberized asphalt underlayment is worth the cost.
